W.E.L.K.S. Championship Show 2017 Critique

My thanks to the committee of W.E.L.K.S. for my invitation to judge Deerhounds at their 2017 show. Although entries are not as high as they used to be it is certainly the hounds of quality that we are seeing in the ring today so I had plenty of choices. I was looking for soundness and movement, this is a running hound and I found it without exception in all my winners and was delighted to see my B.O.B.  go on to win Hound Group 2.

MINOR PUPPY 2 ENTRIES 0 ABSENT
1st Mrs S Cummings Killoeter Tam Dubh
Two super quality pups, this 7 month old is very raw, as you would expect in a giant breed, super head good pigment  but needs to grow into his ears, very well put together. Excels in front, well bodied and shapely and came into his own on the move covering  the ground well with long strides.  Movement more positive that 2nd very proimising.
2nd Mr and Mrs Peach Tiobraid Solo Venture to Kilbourne (NAF TAF)
Close decision, another young promising hound out of the top drawer, super head, better ears than winner. Well angled all though, though he would be my winner on first look today was just out moved by 1st but I shall watch his progress, good things to come.

A very nice 9 month old pup with a nice coat and good bone. The best of fronts, balanced with good ribbing and loin. Excellent shoulders, good length from hip to hock which are low. Moved well on knuckled feet,  so much to like.  BPD
2nd Ms Harte Ardneish Poet
First time in the ring for this youngster and he was having a lovely time. A little narrow in front at present and front movement was erratic, but rear action was good and true. A lot to like about him, balanced, nice coat feet need to knuckle up and needs some ring training but kindly handled.

JUNIOR DOG 1 ENTRY 0 ABSENT
1ST Ms M & K S Stuart and Holt Ollandsheart Abraham
Stood alone but nevertheless a very worthy 1st place, just loved this young male, he is far from finished but so promising. He excels in front construction, excellent forechest, good strength and reach in neck, super head and ears. Excellent shoulder, well balance in body, super temperament, excellent coat, sensitively handled I really liked him and had a serious look at him in the challenge, one for the future.

YEARLING DOG 1 ENTRY 0 ABSENT
1ST Mr P and Mrs P Abbott Cotherstone Code Breaker
19 month old hound with a lot to recommend him, Super head, good reach in neck into a well laid shoulder, a little narrow in front at present, he has good length in ribbing, just at the ‘teenage’ stage of development so movement was a little erratic. Still very raw and needs a lot of time which is on his side, well handled.

Another hound standing alone but absolutely worthy of his 1st place. A dog who is maturing well, excels in his super head, masculine with an aqualine nose. This was a dream class with not enough 1st places to go around! All 4 different types and all won top honours on their day but today belonged to this young hound. 1st class and so full of quality and breed type. Exquisit head and expression enough to melt your heart. Good strength and reach of neck falling into an excellent shoulder. Absolutely balanced all through, well bodied and well off for bone. Sound on movement with long easy strides, well muscled with 2nd thigh, good length in upper arm. Moved with reach in front and drive behind. Excellent topline and tail set. Up close in the challenge but the winner was more mature. His time will come as he must have a great future. Res CC
2nd Mr A & Mrs V Lewis  Luckhurst Nairn
Won his place on excellent movement especially in front which was faultless, sound behind, an honest well put together mature hound Excellent ribbing, would like more length in the loin to complete the picture. High quality, well handled.

Another quality puppy who has a lot of maturing to do, I love her head, excellent neck with good reach, well set shoulders carried well back, excellent ribbing. Three very different types who could all change places anther day. No one doing anything to help the handlers, nevertheless this feminine bitch was the one to get it together on the move. Nice quality super head and soft expression balanced and holds her topline in the move. Nice fallaway, raw at present but she has a lovely side gait with a long stride and was well handled.
2nd Ms M & Ms K Stuart & holt Ollandheart Nancy

YEARLING BITCH ENTRY 3 ABSENT 0
1ST Mr M J & Mrs G M Peach Blixten Star to Kilbourne
These two bitches were shown in excellent condition, very similar in type and many comments apply to them both. Both well balanced but preferred the length of loin in this very good quality bitch. Pleasing head, correct ears excellent shoulder and good topline which she held on the move. Broad hips with length from hip to hock which are set low. Feet well knuckled as with 2nd place. Absolutely true fore and aft but this bitch has the longer stride in profile helped no doubt by the extra length in loin and ground covering movement.
2nd Mrs S Taylor – Minerva McGonagall of Ormanstar
Much of the above applies and I am sure they will change places in the future. High quality excelled in her very feminine head, excellent feet and harsh coat. Well presented and handled a very close decision.

PPST GRADUATE BITCH ENTRIES 6 ABSENT 2
1st Dr S Helps Beardswood Taisie
A lovely class of 4 different types, this bitch is so correct to go over, she combines strength soundness and breed type in abundance. Displaying balance in length to height ratio she is not exaggerated, super front, pleasing topline with just the right rise over the loin. Breadth through hips harsh dark coat , a dream on the move, one to watch, well presented.
2nd Mrs L Steele – Sorimsway Sweet Victory
Another hound of quality, super head with aqualine nose, well placed ears,  strength and reach in neck. Good ribbing carried well back, well developed quarters which she used to full advantage on the move. Topline good when standing but tends to flatten on the move. Showed reach and driving movement on excellent feet. A lot to like about her well presented.
3rd Mrs D A Roberts Ardlancien Eriskey

LIMIT BITCH 7 ENTRIES 1 ABSENT
1ST Mrs J WRAGG – Neroche Jeska
This young bitch really took my eye. Nothing I didn’t like about her. Feminine head with good pigmentation and small well set ears. Power and strength in neck with good reach, excellent shoulder, well bodied broad through hips with length from him to hock. Excellent bend of stifle. Long stride sound fore and aft. At this point I thought her unbeatable but she wasn’t on top form and didn’t put in the effort in the challenge Considered for CC but the open bitch pulled out all the stops today. Lovely bitch her day will come. Res CC
2nd Dr S Helps Beardswood Quintessence
A bitch I have much admired she has such quality and presence, super head with a faraway expression, neat well set ears good pigmentation and aqualine nose. Very good shoulder well balanced and excels on the move, absolutely my cup of tea and if I could take one home this would be the one. She stole my heart, very well presented and handled.

OPEN BITCH 6 ENTRIES 3 ABSENT
1ST Mrs AP & Mr J Redmond & Friend – Ch. Shagiead Lady Sea with Greybrows
Beautiful bitch pure quality this is one I have admired and given top honours to at the Club Show and today she had a lot to live up to with some high class bitches to get past before she won her place. When she entered the ring I hoped I’d feel the same about her and she certainly didn’t disappoint. She excels in soundness and movement, so well constructed and balanced, not flashy or over exaggerated,  fluid true movement with strength and substance. She has it all and made sure she used them to her advantage, shown in top condition her movement is a joy, the more you move her the better she gets showing reach and drive with long effortless stride. CC BOB Delighted to see her go Hound Grop 2 – what a star.
2nd Mrs S J Taylor Kilbourne Pandora to TalorPeche
A beautiful bitch, full of quality and breed type who was by no means overshadowed by the winner.  She challenged hard and gave of her best with her long ground covering stride and sound easy action. She is impressive going around. I love her head, good bone and excellent coat. An honest sound moving hound just preferred the topline of the winner never the less a truly impressive bitch well presented and shown.
